'Mao May Resign To Write More’
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) HONG KONG, Dec. 21.
Chinese Communist circles in Peking believe Mao TseTung may resign as the Chinese Communist Party boss, the Associated Press reported. The report came yesterday from a prominent Hong Kong Chinese just back from one of his frequent trips to China.
The source, who declined to be identified, said Mr Mao would remain the dominant figure in the party even if he resigned. All major party decisions, he said, still would be decided by Mr Mao, whose prestige and stature no other Chinese communist could match.
He said Mr Mao’s resignation might be announced at China’s Third National Peoples Congress, now in session in Peking. The man said Peking Com-
munist circles report that Mr Mao, who will be 71 on December 26, wants to devote more time to writing, particularly on the Chinese-Soviet ideological dispute. The visitor quoted those who saw Mr Mao recently as saying the Chinese Communist Party boss was having difficulties in breathing and walking. Western visitors returning from China via Hong Kong also have reported Mr Mao in failing health. President Liu Shao-Chi generally is believed to be Mr Mao’s heir.
