SOUTHLAND GUINEAS

Status Symbol Entered

If Status Symbol races up to her best form on the South Canterbury - North Otago holiday circuit she will probably represent Riccarton in the Southland Guineas on the second day of the Southland Racing Club’s summer meeting at Invercargill on January 5. Mr R. E. Scorgie’s Dogger Bank filly, a last start winner against the hack sprinters at Hororata, will probably have two more races as a lead up to the Southland classic. The first will be the Fairview Improvers’ Handicap at Washdyke today week, and the other will probably be at the Waikouaiti Racing Club’s meeting on New Year’s Day. Status Symbol, a member of J. L. Barr’s team, has already reached an awkward position in the weights although she has won only two races. As a two-year-old last season her only success was in the Lyndhurst Handicap at Ashburton in June, and her lone winning run this term was at Hororata last Saturday week. Those two wins were worth £365, so she still has to earn another £385 in winning stakes yet to clear hack class.

At Ashburton. Status Symbol carried 8-2 when the minimum was 8-0. In the Coalgate Hack Handicap at Hororata she was top-weight with 9-0, 131 b above the minimum. Status Symbol obviously earned her high rating as a result of her second placing in the John Grigg Stakes at Ashburton in the spring. In that event she carried 8-5, 51b less than Royal Burgh, the winner, and Shipmate, which followed her home. In the Fairview Improvers' Handicap at Washdyke next Tuesday Status Symbol is still top-weight with 9-0. but this time she will be giving 181 b to the tail-enders. Unless she is successful in this event or the race which is chosen for her at Waikouaiti a Southland Guineas’ victory would still not take her out of hack class. The winner’s share of the stake in the classic at Invercargill is £325, and a rug valued at 10 guineas. This would still leave her £49 10s short of the hack limit.

Re-Entry Order The following is a corrected order for right of re-entry of the horses balloted out of the Breeders’ Plate at Ellerslie on Saturday:—Think Twice (11) 7-13; Aleader (8) 7-12: Meadow Fox (3) 7-7: Barraminti (2) 7-12; Big Beau (5) 7-10.—(P.A.)
