RACING Champ Shows Fitness For Holiday Racing
Champ, which developed brilliant form to win four races in successive starts in the holiday racing a year ago, shapes as if he will again be a good winner for Riccarton this year.
He will be taken south today with his stablemates, Zinder and Natter, and will run in the James Hazlett Gold Cup at Wingatui on Saturday.
Champ and Zinder sprinted fast in company with Valuate on the plough at Riccarton yesterday. Valuate, ridden by P. Daly, won the seven-furlong trial by a length from Zinder (Wildermoth) and Champ (Stokes). He recorded Imin 28 3-ssec and 50 2-ssec for the last half-mile.
Champ carried more weight than his rivals but that did not appear to place him at any disadvantage. The James Hazlett Gold Cup will be Champ’s first race since June, but he has done much useful work and should run out a mile strongly. Zinder appears to have freshened nicely since he last raced and may be ready for a show of form on the circuit. He will run in the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap on Saturday and may then return for the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting. Valuate is also engaged in the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap. He will not be one of the fancied runners unless the ground is soft. Magician (Telfer), a fit horse for the James Hazlett Gold Cup, sprinted seven furlongs in Imin 30sec, the last three in 37 2-ssec. C. T. Wilson will ride Magician in the Wingatui race, in which he was second to Castle Flight last year. Brown Brocade (Daly) led Royal Bid (F. H. Skelton) by half a length ending seven furlongs in Imin 32 4-ssec, the last half-mile in 51 3-ssec. Brown Brocade, a last-start third in the Hororata Cup, must be given a light-weight chance in the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap. Tuborg (A. H. Eastwood) ran her seven furlongs in Imin 32 2-ssec, the last four in 52 l-ssec.
Jacmar (Telfer) was shading Hayman (Stokes) after running seven furlongs in Imin 30 2-ssec. They sped over the opening three furlongs in 37 3-ssec, and the first half-mile in 50 2-ssec. Fast Solo Run
Magic Ring (Swanson) led her stablemate Clipper (Stechmann) by a neck after running seven furlongs in Imin 30sec, the last four in 51 2-ssec and the final three in 38sec. Summer Lad (Stokes) dashed over six furlongs in Imin 16 l-ssec, a smart solo effort. Opportunity (Swanson) had a slight lead over his stableniates. Mister Bud (F. H. Skelton) and Deladana (Daly) finishing six furlongs in Imin 17 2- the last four in 50 3- and the final three in 38 l-ssec.
Mister Bud shaped well under a good weight in his trial for the Mornington Improvers’ Handicap at Wingatui.
Bodkin (A. H. Eastwood) was one of the most impressive over less ground on the plough. He seed in from the half-mile in 47 4-ssec. He has a bit of age on him. but retains a sharp turn of speed.
Scuffle (C. T. Wilson) and El Beka (Daly) were paired ; for an easy half-mile. They: took 53 3-ssee after a slowfirst furlong. Last Dip (Wildermoth) got her tongue over the bit in her half mile gallop with Dowmanca (Stokes) but she stayed on terms and they finished a good gallop in 51sec. Caprino (Stokes), which sprinted brilliantly on Saturday, was given a less demanding task this time—half a mile tin 52 3-ssec.
Other gallops on the plough included:—
Nine furlongs.—Last Count (A. H. Eastwood) and Misjudge (C. T. Wilson) 2min 7 3-ssec, last half-mile, 55 2-5 sec, final three furlongs, 42 l-ssec.
Five furlongs.—Mutch (F. H. Skelton), Symbolist (Collins), and Sabell (Stechmann) Imin 7 4-ssec, last three, 39 3-ssec; Golden Boy (F. H. Skelton) and Leslie Bell (McGuire) Imin 4 3-ssec, last half-mile, 49 4-ssec. Half-mile.—Coseta (Collins) and Natter (Stokes) 53 2-ssec.
Three furlongs.—Sir Limond (J. Cowan) and Aoudo (R. Register) 37 4-ssec; Newbrook (C. T. Wilson) 37sec. Good Sprint General Gilbert (Swanson) did well to record 50 4-ssec in a half-mile trial on the outside of the course proper with Canadiana (Mrs V. Clut-
terbuck) and Donna Gola (F. H. Skelton). Donna Gola broke clear early, and General Gilbert was last in a gap of two lengths at the half-mile, but they were running in close order at the end. with Caniadiana holding to a short lead. I Te Mania, ridden by her trainer, C. McDonald, sprinted ( her half-mile in 52 4-ssec. I She won at Wingatui in the (spring, and returns there for ■the Champagne Stakes on I Saturday. ' Apparel, ridden by his race (rider. W. Traecey, ran half (a mile in 52sec. It was a good solo trial by this Cassock gelding, which runs in the President’s Intermediate Handicap at Wingatui on Saturday. Danny Kaye (A. H. Eastwood) impressed more than his stablemate, Quick Flight (McGuire), over five furlongs in a trial for the Champagne Stakes at Wingatui. Danny Kaye won comfortably by a length and ran the last half-mile in 52sec. The stablemates, W’e Wood (Daly) and Allegretto (Traecey), finished half a mile on terms in 53 4-ssec. Polly’s Pal (Edens) was going keenly with a short lead over Status Symbol (Collins) finishing half a mile in 53 l-ssec. Polly’s Pal is an unlikely runner in the Mornington Improvers’ Handicap at Wingatui. She drew I third from the outside in a I field of 25.
