FUNDS FOR CHARITY
Schoolgirls’ Efforts
Two groups of primary schoolgirls who formed clubs to help less fortunate children recently handed over the money they had raised. Six children from the Elmwood area, Vivienne Ellena, Joan Nichol, her sister Elizabeth, Anne Walsh, Diane Munro and Elizabeth Paton—took the first letters of their Christian names to make a name for their club—Devaje. During the last few months they held two concerts, presented a play and organised a stall. They cycled into town last week and gave the proceeds, £7 6s lOd, to the secretary of the Canterbury-West Coast branch of the New Zealand Crippled Children Society (Mrs M. L. Bernacchi), and, over afternoon tea, asked questions about those who were to benefit from their efforts.
Robyn Jackman, Linda Glanville and Paulette Marsden, from Rolleston, conceived the same idea last October. They formed the Helping Hand Club, and have presented more than £5 and a suitcase of clothing to C.0.R.5.0. headquarters in Christchurch, for children overseas.
These contributions came from jobs, mostly paying about 2s, which they found by going from door to door and offering to do domestic work. There was a scarcity of people who wanted them to peel potatoes or do messages.
