COMPOSER HONOURED.—Benjamin Britten (right) being presented with the gold medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society by the society’s chairman, Sir Thomas Armstrong, at the Albert Hall, London, recently after a performance of Britten’s “War Requiem” conducted by John Pritchard. The society’s medal was first struck in 1870 to mark the centenary of Beethoven’s birth. Other living composers to have received the medal are Mr Igor Stravinsky, Sir William Walton, and Sir Arthur Bliss.
