Pope Paul has issued a 1 1 personal appeal for Buddhists i and Catholics to co-operate J “especially in certain zones {where the two communities 1 I Live together and are conjfronted with the same prob- • I lems.” He did not specifically name South Vietnam, but his ■ appeal seemed to apply especially to that country, . where there has been conflict : of interests between the Catholic and Buddhist communities, Associated Press > said. Vatican officials said the I Pope read his message to the president of the Asian Bud dhist Fed erati on (Riri Nakayama), whom the Pontiff received on Thursday in private audience. He gave a copy of the mes- ' sage to the Buddhist leader to take back with him to Japan, where he lives. Nakayama was reported to have told the Pope he would do : what he could to encourage ’ greater fraternity between Buddhists and Catholics.
