ABDUCTED GANGSTER
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, Dec. 21.
Joseph (“Joe Bananas”) Bonanno is due at his lawyer’s office in New York today—two months after his sensational disappearance that evoked memories of Chicago-style gangland “rubouts” of the 1920 s and 19305.
Bonnano, alias Peppino Bonanno, alias Johnny Boventine, was abducted by a gang of armed men while with his lawyer, Mr William Maloney, on New York’s elegant Park avenue a few hours before he was to testify before a Grand Jury probing organised crime. There was speculation that Bonanno, a 59-year-old Sicil-ian-born kingpin of the Cosa Nostra (our thing) crime syndicate, had been “taken for a ride” by gangland rivals. Traditionally, “ride” victims never come back. Suddenly, last Friday, Mr Maloney announced that his client was “safe and sound” and would reappear in his office today ready to go before the Grand Jury.
