ORDEAL IN STRAIT

Empty Dinghy Found

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, Dec. 21

The two skin-divers who spent Saturday night swimming in Cook Strait could have been home in time for tea, said Mr F. Dellabarca, owner of the fishing boat Denise, today. The Denise picked up their empty dinghy about five miles off Sinclair Head at 6 p.m., eight hours before the first of the two staggered ashore. “It was a rotten feeling when we spotted the boat and found nobody in it,” said Mr Dellabarca. “They should never have abandoned their dinghy under the conditions. “The wind was only five knots and there was only a foot-high rip. It was a good dinghy and had a good pair of oars. It could have stood conditions four times worse than that,” he said. “They stood a much better chance of being spotted in their boat.”
