SWOLLEN ANKLE

Sukarno’s Ailment (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) DJAKARTA, Dec. 16. President Sukarno’s present swollen ankle may be a direct result of a kidney malfunction, according to competent medical authorities in Djakarta. The official Antara News Agency reported that President Sukarno was suffering the swollen ankle on Saturday in Bogor, about 40 miles south of here.

Yesterday he attended an inauguration ceremony at his Merdeka Palace in his socks and said at one point: “the doctor has advised me not to stand too long.” Soon after the inauguration of Major-General Kosasih, Indonesia’s new Ambassador to Canberra, he limped to a chair and sat down and took off the stocking on his right foot.

A bandage or plaster could be seen across his foot which was examined by Dr. J. Leimena, the second Deputy Prime Minister, and Dr. Suharto, Minister for National Development and Planning, who is still the President’s personal physician.
