Labour Turnover In Industry

Sir,—The Canterbury Manufacturer’s Association comes out at times with statements which show their lack of knowledge on industrial conditions, but their concern with the turnover of employees does them credit, if it is a genuine concern. They do not need a survey to find the reason; it is purely in the return the worker gets for his labour. In our particular industry and in a section which consists of 12 tradesmen, eight learner tradesmen, three fitters, and nine labourers, the average income and labour turnover during the last 12 months is (1963 figures in parenthesis): £l4OO- - nil (nil); £BOO-£l4OO, 25 per cent (nil): £lOOO-£l2OO, 66 per cent (33 per eent); £750-£B5O. 80 per cent (75 per cent). There are other reasons, such as long battles to get any improvement in wages Or conditions, and pay systems so complicated that it becomes almost impossible to check whether one’s pay is correct.—Yours, etc., ’3B AUSTIN. December 15, 1964.
