Vegetarian

“A crazy mixed-up dog” is the only description amateur dog-psychoanalysts can dig up for Rusty, a miniature collie, of Brisbane. Instead of becoming excited at the smell of meat as normal dogs would, Rusty prefers a vegetarian diet. After a bout of distemper, Rusty, the pet of Mrs E. Williamson, of Sunnybank, switched his favourite diet to carrots, peas, beans, lettuce and cabbage—raw or cooked. He eats mashed potato or cooked rice when necessary, but is keenest of all on grated carrots. He fills up on pineapple, oranges, plums and the appropriately named pawpaw. Occasionally for good measure he likes an egg flip.

Paper Wool Packs Woven paper wool packs now being tested .in New Zealand would not contaminate wool, Auckland Federated Farmers were told at a meeting of the meat and wool section. A letter from the Wool Board said two paper packs were being examined. One was from South Africa and the other from Australia. Burnham Parade Four companies of the Ist Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment, held a ceremonial parade at Burnham Military Camp yesterday. The parade marked the debut of the Army’s new issue green berets, worn by Southern Military District soldiers for the first time. Two of the companies paraded in service dress and two in jungle greens—the latter wearing the new beret. Reviewing the troops was the commander of S.M.D. (Brigadier T. C. Campbell).

Airport Brochure An attractive seven-page air travellers’ guide to Christchurch airport is at present being distributed to travel agents in New Zealand and abroad. It has been produced to enable visitors to the city to take advantage of the airport’s facilities. The airport manager (Mr A. I. R. Jamieson) says, in the booklet, that the world-standard terminal building had not only been admired by visitors from abroad but had justified its existence, more than 430,000 passengers arriving and departing last year. Gift To School The Riccarton-Hornby Junior Chamber of Commerce recently gave a “Taranaki climbing frame” for the playground of the Marylands school at Addington. The frame was paid for out of the receipts of several Jaycee projects held during the year. The Marylands school is' run by the Roman Catholic Brothers of St. John of God on an interdenominational basis.

Sunday Cabaret The Rotorua City Council has rescinded an earlier decision and granted Chequers Cabaret, Ltd., permission to stay open on Sundays after Mrs E. M. Urquhart had told members they had to move in pace with the times. The council had previously refused the cabaret permission to stay open Sunday afternoon and evenings.
