GRANT FOR RESEARCH
No Renewal At Lincoln Because the Department of Agriculture and the New Zealand Poultry Board believed that all poultry research should be centralised at Massey University an application to the board by Lincoln College for financial assistance for poultry nutrition work had been declined, the college council was informed.
The grant was for £5OOO, with an annual grant of £1750. A letter from the board to the college said that it greaty appreciated the college’s work in recent years in poultry research. Nevertheless, the board said, it believed that centralisation of research should provide a service to the industry from which thp maximum benefit would be obtained without the danger of fragmentation of eSort from the limited amount of finance available for such work.
The poultry research unit at Massey University was not yet fully developed, but when it was it would work in with the previous unit at the college and a teaching service would be integrated, said the letter. Until this unit at Massey had been developed the board did not wish to consider the setting up of additional facilities elsewhere. However, the board added, facilities other than those available at Massey University might be more advantageous in the application of the research conducted or in field trials. The principal of Lincoln College (Dr. M. M. Burns), said that the position was now very difficult. If the work was to go on, the college would have to find the money itself, or it might be able to obtain it from other sources. The council asked Dr. Burns to prepare a report for discussion in February.
