Japanese Ship For Antarctic (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON Dec. 15. The Japanese fisheries training and research ship Umitaka Maru will visit Wellington later this month on her way to the Antarctic on a training voyage. The Umitaka Maru will arrive in Wellington on December 27 and leave on January 3. She carries 39 officers and men, 11 research personnel and 40 cadets under training from the Tokyo University of Fisheries. The stern-trawler type vessel of 1450 tons is fully equipped for all types of fishing research and is owned and operated by the Japanese Government. She will spend about a month in the Ross Sea area engaged in practical training in pelagic fishing, research and ocean navigation.
