GIFT OF £l00

Campaign To Aid Hungry

A cheque for £lOO was handed in at C.0.R.5.0. headquarters on Monday for the Freedom from Hunger Campaign. Over the last few days several persons had called to make contributions, said the organiser for Canterbury and the West Coast (Mr G. H. Coley). "This one was exceptionally generous.” Primary and secondary school pupils have raised £1650 for the campaign through various projects. The schools are mainly in Canterbury, but also on the West Coast.

Copper trails, lunch-hour concerts and bring-and-buy stalls are among the ways the children have used to gather funds. One country school was particularly inventive, and organised a garden party. “This is done largely on their own initiative and through their own imagination and enthusiasm,” said Mr Coley. The children may nominate how the money is to be spent, and some decided on the purchase of ploughs for Asian farmers.

The campaign aims to help underprivileged persons make more effective use of the natural resources of their countries, and does not make unspecified cash grants. With fewer than threequarters of C.0.R.5.0.’s gratitude boxes returned, proceeds stand at £1872. The churches distributed boxes among 10,000 homes in Canterbury, excluding Christchurch city, and the West Coast. Each member of the family gives one penny a meal for a week, to help the hungry. Last year the scheme was very successful in Christchurch.
