SEWER TO GO INTO ISLEWORTH STREET

The laying of a shallow sewer in Isleworth street as soon as possible was approved by the Chritchurch Drainage Board last evening. It agreed that all sections with a frontage on to the street should be permitted to connect. Reporting on a petition which was presented by residents of the street, the policy committee said that in normal circumstances Isleworth street between Leacroft street and Breens road would have been sewered as part of the third-stage sewer reticulation loan.

When an earlier petition was received, it had been confirmed that there was a layer of shingle at some depth below the sections. Results of soakage tests in nearby areas appeared to indicate that disposal would be achieved satisfactorily in the shingle, and it was felt that this should be tried before any al-

teration of priorities was considered. The position had changed. Because of the development beyond Breens road, it was now possible to design the reticulation so that a shallow sewer took only a small load from the frontage of Isleworth street only. Although this still meant that the peak flow under flood conditions would probably cause some gorging of the outfall sewer, this was not a serious matter, as it would be relieved when the normal reticulation took place. The Waimairi county health inspector had reported that soakage pits had given relief for a short time, but the shingle was not sufficiently open to give satisfactory disposal for a long period on small sections. Several properties were in difficulties with sullage disposal. The committee said 20 chains of sewer would be needed at an estimated cost of £4OOO.
