THEFTS OF TREES

Patrol Begun

Twenty-five young trees have been cut and stolen, presumably for Christmas trees, from reserves and plantations of the Christchurch City Council. A round-the-clock patrol has now been instituted, and any offender caught will be prosecuted. The Director of Parks and Reserves (Mr H. G. Gilpin) said yesterday that more than 4000 thinnings from city plantations would be made available to various organisations and garden centres for sale as Christmas trees, so there was no excuse for vandalism.

Mr Gilpin appealed for the protection of trees in plantations everywhere.
