700th Anniversary
(Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, Dec. 15. When the Queen opened Parliament early in November she referred to the approaching 700th anniversary of the Parliament of Simon de Montfort. It has now been decided that Simon de Montfort is to be remembered and celebrated in both Houses of Parliament on the morning of January 20. In the Lords, the Lord Chancellor will, read a statement commemorating the seven hundredth anniversary of the Parliament de Montfort summoned, and in the Commons the Speaker will make a similar statement. Afterwards, members of both Houses will join in the Royal robing room In the
Lords to drink a toast, not to a great Democrat or Parliamentarian but at least to the nobleman who gave the
cities and shires a place in Parliament, says “The Times.” The decision is to be reached this week by the Ministers and other dignitaries who have been consulted, whether the commemoration in both Houses shall be televised and thereby be given a permanent record. If this happens it will be the first time television cameras have been allowed in the Commons when the Speaker is presiding over a sitting. There is a cogent argument that a film of an occasion such as this would arouse interest throughout the world, especially in the Commonwealth and in the United States.. It may well prevail over a suspicion in some quarters that once the television cam-
eras establish a footing in the Commons, even for unmistakably special proceedings, the issue of whether the Commons should have permanent television might be a little compromised. Later next year, in June, Parliament will celebrate another landmark of history —the seven hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the signing of Magna Carta. This ceremony, with the Queen taking the leading part, will be held in Westminster Hall, and representatives of many Western countries are expected to join with Commonwealth High Commissioners and members of both Houses.
