MAPLE LEAF FLAG

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) OTTAWA, December 15. After months of bitter debate, the Canadian House of Commons today approved a new flag by 163 votes to 78. A flag with a red maple leaf on a white field flanked by red panels will replace the Union Jack, and the Red Ensign with the Canadian coat of arms. The new flag has still to be approved by the Canadian Senate. Before the vote, the Prime Minister (Mr Lester Pearson) made an impassioned appeal to the House, urging members to "rally round this red maple leaf flag.” ; "This is a good flag,” he said, arms outstretched in an appeal to the Opposition benches. "It’s a Canadian flag.” he added, to a desk-thump-ing roar of approval from his own Liberal supporters. “We hope Canada can go forward as a strong and united country with this flag as its emblem,” he said.
