One Behind Record Golf Score

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 13. The Australian golfer, E. A. Ball, three-putted four times during the 72 holes of the Wills £2OOO golf tournament at Heretaunga. Had he saved one of these, Ball would have set a new record aggregate for four rounds in New Zealand. Ball’s total of 266 equalled the aggregate score of K. D. G. Nagle in the New Zealand Open at Shirley, and won him the Wills Classic by five strokes on Saturday. The Australian’s rounds were 63, 71, 64 and 68. Joint second were the Manawatu professional, B. J. Coxon, who came home in a rush on Saturday with two rounds of 65, and another Australian, R. Tuohy. These two, on 271, headed C. Johnson by two strokes, and behind Johnston, on 274, were Nagle, A. Murray and G. Watson. The first New Zealander was W. J. Godfrey, on 277. Dropped strokes on each of the last two holes in the morning round prevented Ball from breaking the course record of 63 he held with Tuohy. He was eight under par coming to the seventeenth but took two fives to finish. He started the final round quietly but on the 180-yard, third, he put his tee shot within an inch of the hole. Two more birdies and he was out in 32 but he dropped a couple of strokes at stages of the homeward nine and was back in 36. “I have been having a rough trot in New Zealand and have not known just

where the ball was going,” he said. “However, I had a fair idea today where it was heading.” Tuohy, who putted brilliantly for his 63 in the second round, was just missing his putts on Saturday. His length from anything up to 30 feet was superb but they were just not dropping. Coxon slipped into second place with morning halves of 33 and 32, and then he followed this by going out in 34, home in 31 in the afternoon. Five birdies and 13 par holes made up his card in the final round, and he said: “It’s about time I played well.” Johnston was another who played immaculate golf on Saturday. His morning round was 67, his afternoon one, 65. Murray and Nagle played together and both had their troubles, especially on the greens. Nagle lamented afterwards that he had “missed 12 or more putts during the four rounds, all under five feet.” The first amateurs were I. D. Woodbury, of Hutt, and H. C. Kendall, of Manawatu. Woodbury had just qualified

but with 71 and 70 on Saturday ended with 288. The leaders were: (•Denotes professionals) 266: *E. A. Ball (Aust.), 63, 71, 64. 68. 271: *R. Tuohy (Aust.), 70, 63, 70, 68; *B. J.
