ATHLETICS Mrs Stephen, Pyne Do Well In Season’s First Runs

The Olympic bronze medallist, Mrs M. A. M. Stephen, and the winner of the recent cross-country trial, A. G. Pyne, were both well satisfied with their performances on their first track appearances of the season at Rugby Park on Saturday. They were preparing for the Agfa international meeting at Lancaster Park this week.

Mrs Stephen had been back in training for only two weeks and she thought she would be lucky to break 58sec for the quarter-mile. Mrs Stephen set about her task with dash and there was no flagging as she came up the straight to complete the distance in 56.65ec. Pyne has run faster miles, but he was exceedingly pleased with his 4min 13.1 sec effort on Saturday. A member of the New Zealand harrier team for the international championships in Europe next year, Pyne achieved an excellent time in view of his recent switch from five minute pace running for harriers to prepare for the three-mile match with M. G. Halberg next Saturday. Good Long Jumps The standard in the senior long jump was one of the best seen at an inter-dub fixture at Rugby Park. Although competitors were favoured slightly by a following wind, it was an encouraging sign that three men should exceed 22ft. The winner, K. Simpson, just missed clearing 23ft, and his best jump was measured at 22ft Ilin, 3 inches ahead of W. Jowett. Mrs V. I. Young was in grand form again with the discus which she sent to 176 ft OJin. This was Ijin short of the national record she set on November 7. The strong wind up the home straight mitigated against exceptional sprint times but nonetheless a re-cord-equalling performance was made by C. Baker (Riccarton) in a section of the under-17 220 yards contests. The performance is not expected to go on the books, however, as the timekeepers were unable to sight the flash from the gun and started their watches from the sound.
