Good Performance By J.W. Kiddey
It was almost a case of J. W. Kiddey versus Old Collegians. In a fine spell of accurate bowling be took seven wickets for 35 runs and then hit 79 runs tn the same number of minutes to place Riccarton in a strong position after its earlier batsmen had failed.
Old Collegians had Its customary shaky start. J. H. M. Dawson was out first ball and soon four wickets were down for 28. J. E. England and H. J. Taylor made a brief show of resistance, but Kiddey had an extraordinary spell when he took four wickets in four overs without conceding a run to make the score 84 for nine.
However, N. F. Curtis, an uninhibited hitter, and S. J. Hunt, who batted very soundly, added 52 for the last wicket to give Old Collegians the moderate total of 136.
At one stage that' almost seemed sufficient when Riccarton was 98 for seven. Curtis and Dawson had both bowled well and the Riccarton batsmen seemed falliable against their accurate seam bowling. But J. F. Logie . and Kiddey added 88 in 48 minutes. Both had their share of luck, Kid‘dey was dropped five times and Logie twice but their aggression paid off when Riccarton finished 104 runs ahead. However, it seemed that the Old Collegians captain, England, erred in taking Curtis off when he had taken four for 28 and replacing him with the spinners, M. G, Lester and B. A. Carpenter. Curtis was brought back later, but by then Kiddey and Logie were in full command and hitting everything. The mpires are Messrs L. C. Moore and A. R. Knight.
