GOLF Record 63 Wins Dunk Top Money

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 6. The little man with the big swing was not among the many pace-makers of the first two days, but with a final round of 63, which broke the course record at Chamberlain Park by two strokes, E. W. Dunk, the Sydney professional, on Saturday, gained a magnificent victory in the Wiseman’s £2OOO golf tournament.

Dunk’s great round included 10 birdies—five in each half—and dramatically ruined what promised to be a thrilling finish between L. Thomas and F. Phillips, the lunchtime leaders, and E. A. Ball, who was two strokes behind at this stage. Dunk (275) won by three strokes from Thomas (278), with Phillips and Ball sharing the third placing on 279. Thomas, the West Australian, and Phillips were six strokes ahead of Dunk at the end of the third round. Erratic First Half Thomas, however, bowed out with an erratic first half which included his failure to escape from the trees in one shot at the seventh and an over-clubbed iron into a ditch at the rear of the ninth. Phillips, who with twounder par for the first eight holes had looked a logical victor, crashed with a seven at the ninth. Dunk’s record round was:— Out: 4,3, 4,3, 4,5, 5, 3, 5—36. Dunk: 3,3, 5,3, 4,4, 4, 9 4—19 In: 4,4, 4 3,4, 3,4, 5, 5—36. Dunk: 4,4, 3,3, 3,3, 3, 4, 4—31. Picked Up Bali Perhaps the remarkable feature of Dunk’s victory was the antithesis it provided to last year’s tournament. In this, Dunk, who was handily placed, picked up his ball at the third hole of the final round, declared that the officials were violating the rules of the game, and refused to continue.

But when fellow professionals passed off his gesture as trivial and unnnecessary, Dunk said: “I will return.” Return he did, and on Saturday it was the same professionals who paid many tributes to the round that wiped them all aside. It was the second victory on the current New Zealand circuit for Dunk, who will be 26 on Thursday during the £2OOO event at Wellington. Final scores:— (* denotes amateur) 275: E. W.
