Nolan ’s Defeat Ist Billiards Upset
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 1. Giving a dazzling display, the 26-year-old Indian, M. Ferriera, caused the first major surprise of the world billiards championships at Pukekohe today when he defeated the English champion, A. Nolan.
In the first session Nolan managed to gain a lead of 100 over the young Indian after the first hour. Then Ferreira scored 52, 79, 62 and took a four-point lead. He added a 74 and by the end of the session led Nolan, 629-551. Nolan seemed in better touch at the start of the night session and began to cut back Ferreira’s lead. Then the Indian reeled off a series of brilliant breaks of 128, 182 and 138 for a lead of 400. With the tension off, Ferreira scored his fourth century of the evening, with a superb top-of-the-table exhibition. Yesberg Outplayed The Canterbury player, T. Yesberg, was outplayed by T. Cleary (Australia). Yesberg led to the first 100, but then the Australian scored breaks of 101, 241 and 146, and with a 400-podnt lead after six visits to the table, was never in danger of defeat.
However, in the second session, Yesberg, even if he had little chance of winning, improved so remarkably that he scored better than Cleary, 601-474, in the last two hours. In the day’s other match.
