Wool Easier At Invercargill

(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, November 30. The recent downward tendency in prices was evident at the second main Invercargill wool sale of the 1964-65 season today. Prices were l|d to 2d a pound on the average below those ruling at the Auckland sale on Wednesday.

The Auck la n d prices were in turn below those at Napier a week ago, and the Napier prices were lower than those at the Christchurch sale on November 10.

the sale were down by 4d to 6d a pound on those ruling at the last sale In Invercargill on October 23. The official range of prices la:—

Compared with prices at the first main Invercargill sale of the season on October 23 those today were lower by up to 6d a pound. The offering of about 22,000 bales was nearly 6000 bales short of the increased quota of 28,000 bales. It is thought that the main reason for the shortage was to be found in the number of Southland farmers who have given up pre-lamb shearing. The wool had opened in fairly satisfactory condition, though some of it was carrying more dust than usual. It was obvious from the outset that buyers were operating within reduced limits. This was particularly noticeable In the bidding for ewe and hogget wool, which made up the greater part of the catalogue. Not much secondshear wool was offered. Relatively, there was a better demand and more spirited bidding for crutchings and other oddments than there was for fleece wool, but the big price range through which this bidding went at times helped to slow the rate of selling considerably. Passings were fairly frequent and the percentage was bigger in fleece wool than in oddments. In some cases it was obvious from the prices suggested by the auctioneer and the prices at which the lots were passed in that either growers or brokers had different ideas of values from those of the buyers. This did not apply to all fleece wool, some lots of which sold at prices equal to or above those suggested by the auctioneer and there seemed to be a good measure of agreement as to the prices for oddments.
