AIR CRASH “HOAX”
Search After Patea Report (N.Z. Press Association) HAWERA, November 9. Detective-Sergeant R. G. Mitchell, of Patea, said this morning he was satisfied a report that a Cessna aircraft had crashed in the sea three miles from Patea was a hoax. An anonymous telephone call to a Hawera resident, Mrs B. M. Aitken, wife of a Hawera Aero Club member who was also a top-dressing pilot, at 4 p.m. on Saturday sparked off inquiries by Hawera and Patea police and the Civil Aviation Administration in Wellington. An R.N.Z.A.F. Bristol freighter aircraft was diverted from its route to carry out a search. Mrs Aitken said the telephone call was made by a person who “sounded a bit under the weather.”
