Teams Sent Off As Referee Suspends Soccer Game

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) LONDON, Nov. 8. Everton and Leeds United players were all sent off the field for five minutes on Saturday by the referee, Mr K. Stokes, after a series of incidents in their English League first division match. The referee’s decision in the 37th minute to suspend play was unprecedented in English League history, although it has happened in international matches. Before the match resumed, Mr Stokes warned the players that he would abandon the game completely if they did not control themselves. Leeds eventually won, 1-0. This match overshadowed everything else in Saturday’s programme in which the leading four clubs in the first division all won. The order at the top remains Manchester United (26 points), Chelsea (25), and Nottingham Forest and Leeds, 22 each. Left-Back Sent Off The match at Everton was only four minutes old when Alex Brown, the Everton leftback and a Scottish World Cup squad member, was sent off by Mr Stokes. Play continued with some ill-tempered exchanges and eight minutes before halftime, Bill Bell, the Leeds leftback, and Derek Temple, the

Everton outside-right, collided. As both men lay on the ground receiving attention from their trainers, Mr Stokes suspended play. The second division match at Preston in which Preston wis beaten 5-2 by Manchester City was another game held up briefly. A loudspeaker announcement warned that the referee would have to abandon this match if the crowd did not stop throwing missiles, including beer cans, behind one goal. This, together with the Everton incident, made it one of the blackest Saturdays in English soccer history for conduct by players and fans.
