“JUST VERY MEDIOCRE”

Charles 72 At Shirley Playing off the back tees, on the New Zealand Open course, R. J. Charles went round in 72 at Shirley yesterday. Charles remarked that, with the wind and a little rain, the conditions “were not too easy” but still felt that he only had a mediocre round. “There’s still a lot of room for improvement,” he added, and said that he had needed two woods to reach the green at both the sixth and fourteenth; however, he was chipping well and this enabled him to do par figures in spite of any short drives. Charles said that he did not look like doing any better or any worse: “It was just very mediocre.” In practice rounds this week, Charles has consistently been in the low 70’s.
