‘MISREPRESENTING’ THE CHURCHES

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter — Copyright) LONDON, November C. The Archbishop of Canterbury (Dr. Michael Ramsey) today alleged “misrepresentation” of the British Council of Churches.

He referred to a recent report urging economic sanctions against South Africa because of her apartheid policies.

The council’s report criticised Britain’s two main political parties for “affording indirect encouragement to apartheid in that they are both opposed to sanctions, but have no alternative to suggest.”

The report recommended cutting off arms supplies to South Africa, ending special privileges remaining from her previous Commonwealth membership, imposing commercial controls where collective action would make sense, and discouraging permanent emigration to South Africa.

Dr. Ramsey said the report was made after a long study by a working party of Christians “having deep knowledge of South Africa and love for all her people.” Dr. Ramsey said: “At no point did we approve a policy of ‘prophylactic violence.’ This phrase occurs in a passage of the report simply describing the arguments of those who call for the military enforcement of sanctions. This policy is explicity rejected.”
