He meant it too, I’m positive of That. It didn’t sound like Something he had read, A glib Apology he’d got off pat. If not original, at least it seemed As good an Explanation as I’ve heard. His were no Dreams of Avarice—he dreamed Nightmares of Penury! Was This absurd? We wasn’t a New Zealander. No, Sir! His Millions were in Dollars, and not Few. If it WAS Fear that pricked him on, that Spur Is One I don’t much envy him, do YOU? Yet I suspect he was at least Half right, And spoke with some Self-knowledge of his Case. Great Fortunes may be founded on sheer Fright; As Fear of Losing sometimes wins the Race. The wealthiest Kiwi’s Nest is feathered sparely, Compared with Others’ Notions of Success From This, Sir, do You think it might be fairly Deduced, his Fear of Poverty is Less?
