HEMLOCK IN PARK
Discovery By Circus The owner of Sole Brothers Circus (Mr J. Perry) said he heaved a sigh of relief yesterday when his circus arrived at Hagley Park. “After all the trouble we had with our elephants on the West Coast, I thought our worries were over,” he said. But as the circus hands put out the animals to graze, they discovered areas of the poisonous hemlock growing under the trees. The Christchurch City Council’s noxious weeds inspector (Mr A. W. MacKenzie) said last evening that council workmen went immediately to the park and grubbed out most of the hemlock. “The council is very, very concerned about this weed, and public notice has been given that it must be cleared from all properties by December 31,” said Mr MacKenzie. “As soon as the circus moves out of the park, we will spray the area.”
