Copper Car Returns
A CAR of copper, built in 1921 by Mr P. Lewis, of Auckland, has been given to a vintage car enthusiast and is to be restored for use in car shows and rallies. The car used to be a common sight outside the shop of its owner in Queen street, where apprentices could be seen polishing it to a high gloss.
Mr Lewis, who died eight years ago, built the car of copper on a Dodge chassis.
It was powered by a Dodge engine. At the time it was estimated the car cost about £lOOO to build. The car body abounds with scrollwork and hammerwork patterns. Originally built as an open car, it was fitted with a metal top in 1931. The car has travelled thousands of miles, including one trip from Kaitaia to Bluff, and always stood in the open, where the copper body protected it from corrosion.
