Possible Commuter Air Service Described
A possible commuter air service between Christchurch and Wellington which would take only passengers with carry-on baggage and for which there would be virtually no booking was described '
to the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce last evening by Mr J. Roysmith. Mr Roysmith, who is chairman of the chamber’s air service committee, said the committee understood the National Airways Corporation would give favourable consideration to such a service when the time was right and when new faster aircraft had been introduced. Mr Roysmith said commuter services operated between San Francisco and Los Angeles, and also between New York and Washington. These offered a regular schedule for businessmen who required to visit a city for a period of, say, a few hours.
Discussions were going on with N.A.C. to see w-hether tests could be carried out to find out how popular a service would be and how it would work, he said. The service would save substantial time on the Christchurch-Wellington trip. A booked ticket would be needed to get on, but not a booked seat. A suggested feature was quicker ground transport at Wellington. The chamber decided that it had no objection to such a service.
