Tallow Loaders Object To TV
(Neto Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, October 30. Loading of bulk tallow aboard the Kwangsi at Dunedin stopped for about an hour today when waterside workers refused to let a television cameraman take pictures of them.
The Kwangsi had arrived a few hours earlier from Lyttelton, where a labour dispute about the loading of tallow had delayed the ship for two weeks.
Pumping of the 260 tons of tallow to be loaded at Dunedin began without incident at Victoria wharf. But when the cameraman shaped to take pictures of the men connecting the hoses for a further load of tallow the foreman warned them not to work until the cameraman went. Public Wharf He refused to leave. The general manager of the Otago Harbour Board (Mr W. Keir) was approached. He agreed it was a public wharf and that the photographer, Mr K. Lloyd, was free to remain. Three tankers were held up while the discussions went on. At one stage, when Mr Lloyd tried to take some film, some of the workers jumped in front of his camera to prevent his doing so. Finally, the workmen agreed to start work and be filmed—but only if their back view was all that was to be seen.
