RICE FOR KOREA

Stall Raised £305

A record £305 was earned for the Save the Children Fund by Mrs M. W. Simes’ sewing bee stall last month. This was announced at the monthly meeting of the North Canterbury committee of the fund yesterday. Of the proceeds £250 has been sent to buy rico for needy Korean children and the remaining £55 has been sent to the Save the Children Fund headquarters in London. The committee decided to send £2OO to the London general fund also, to be used for work in Greece and Crete. It was reported that the committee’s Rice Bowl appeal was progressing satisfactorily in the North Canterbury area. “The schools have been wonderful.” said the chairman (Miss M. G. Havelaar). Plans were announced for the construction of a vocational training school in Pusan, South Korea, for the children of lepers. The school will provide a two-year agricultural, mechanical and crafts training programme for 40 children. An appeal was made to those persons sending parcels to Korean children or families through the Save the Children Fund to include typewritten lists of the contents of the parcel in order to facilitate customs clearance and distribution.
