USED KNIFE TO ESCAPE
On Remand In Hospital (NZ. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Oct. 23. While on remand in Oakley Mental Hospital awaiting sentence for a series of offences, Williams Richard Calder, aged 26, carpenter, used a serrated knife to cut through a window and escape, Mr J. R. Drummond, SJtf., was told today. Calder was recaptured at Nelson 10 days later. He was sentenced to a total of 2j years’ imprisonment today when he appeared for sentence on a number of offences, including escaping from lawful custody, harbouring a fugitive, false pretences, car conversion and theft. Sergeant R. C. Anderson said Calder was remanded to the hospital on September 11 for observation after being convicted on the other offences. At 1.50 a.m. on October 4 he cut his way through a window and escaped, using a blanket to get over a wall. After being driven to Wellington by a friend he made his way to Christchurch, where Calder saw a minister with a view to giving himself up, but he changed his mind and Obtained work in Nelson, where he was arrested on October 14.
