STATISTICS AT SCHOOL

Teaching Urged By Professor The inclusion of statistics in sixth-form mathematics was urged by Professor G. H. Jowett, professor of statistics at Otago University, in a recent address to the Canterbury Mathematical Association. Professor Jowett was appointed to the newly-created chair of statistics at Otago University at the beginning of the year. He spent two days at the University of Canterbury with the mathematics department. He spoke of a “severe world shortage” of mathematicians qualified in statistics. The demand for statisticians in medical and biological research, industrial quality control, traffic analysis, insurance, and many other spheres was expanding rapidly, while the output of graduates qualified in statistics remained very small, he said.
