Charles And Godfrey (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) i MELBOURNE, Oct. 22. New Zealand's two representatives in a £4OOO sponsored golf tournament here made poor starts today. While the American star. Arnold Palmer, set a cracking pace with a 67, six under scratch, the New Zealanders. W. J. Godfrey and R. J. Charles shot 75 and 76 respectively. Godfrey was never happy on the greens on the second half and dropped three strokes to finish level with two South Africans. Dennis Hutchinson and Cedric Amm. Charles, the 1963 British Open champion, was in trouble on the tees and it was only his clever short game which kept his figure down. Leading scores:— 67 A. Palmer (U.S.A.). 68— C.
