TROTTING Carina Star Picked In Leg Of Oamaru Double

Carina Star will be in demand in the George Bruce Memorial Handicap, the first leg of the double on the opening day of the Oamaru Trotting Club’s spring meeting on Saturday. Carina Star has finished further back than sixth in only one of his seven starts this season, while he has had a win, a fourth and a second from his last three starts.

Carina Star paced a splendid race for second over two miles at Forbury Park last Saturday. He had no chance with the winner, Happy Ending, but beat the others fairly convincingly. There was merit in his effort as he met trouble early and came from sixth position racing to the straight. Carina Star is racing most generously at present. This field does not look any stronger than the one he enocuntered at Forbury Park, and he should be capable of a bold showing.

Medico should be ready to make ah early return to winning form. He has had two starts for the season and last Saturday paced a sound race under difficulties to finish sixth in the event won by Happy Ending. He was in trouble at the start and had to work hard to get into a challenging position near the straight entrance. Medico showed splendid form towards the end of last season and he could soon return to that Sirretta, too, has been shaping like an improver in her most recent races. She finished resolutely for third to Happy Ending and Carina Star at Forbury Park last week. She has shown sound staying form at times and could be one of the better prospects. Anterior overcame a check to finish third in the twomile race won by Spring Garrison at Motukarara a fortnight ago, her best effort for some time. She can usually be relied on to hold a prominent position and could easily upset calculations. Dominica ran on for fourth at Forbury Park after breaking early. She is capable of a bold showing, but has not been racing too consistently. Flying Over was a shade disappointing when fifth at Ashburton at his most recent start. He is a proved stayer and could take beating. Wildwood Chief is a problem horse. He has not raced since June, but he has raced well in the past when fresh.

> The distance should not • worry him if he is near his > peak. : Why Not and Legendary ! are capable pacers on the 1 limit, while Admiral, Moose, ' and Strip could be prominent [ in spite of their handicaps 1 of 36 yards. i > Second Leg ' The four-year-olds, Battlefield and Ulove, could dispute the finish to the October Handicap, the second leg of the 1 double. Battlefield was a 1 shade disappointing when ! beaten into fourth place over 1 13} furlongs at Forbury 1 Park on October 10. He set £ all of an easy pace, but was 1 given little respite in the 1 middle stages when chalr lenged by Fancy Ways. He began to shorten stride inside t the furlong and was caught - in the last few yards. Battle- - field is a highly-regarded - young pacer. He could make r amends in this race, in which r he has drawn favourably at - No. 1. i Ulove, too, has drawn well at No. 7. She followed up i two wins with a solid run for - fourth in the race won by Disf band at Forbury Park last t Saturday. Ulove was well . back until the straight enJ trance and she made up a lot t of ground over the final fur- - long. 1 Beresford Lady has not ;- raced since she finished second to Landlord over 12 fur- - longs at Hutt Park on Sepi tember 29. Her racing has i been of a high standard this i. season and she should be one

of the better prospects in this big field. Cuddle Doon was a laststart winner in good time at Ashburton on October 3. He has drawn awkwardly, but even so he could still take part in the finish. Joy euse has been a shade disappointing in her last three starts. She failed rather badly at Forbury Park on October 10 at her most recent start, but could do better on the more roomy track at Oamaru. Adios Anne, Blue Adios, Bourbon Lad, and Seay Boy are other prospects in an open field, but they might find Battlefield and Ulove too good for them.
