Smoking Ban Stops Work

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 21. Freezing workers stopped work at two Auckland works today because the new hygiene regulations, introduced this week, stop them having a cigarette while they are working.

Trouble began at Southdown on Tuesday when about 100 men asked for an extra two breaks each day for “smoko.” The claim was increased to a demand for a “smoko” on the hour, every hour, and the men today switched to asking for a five-minutes’ “knife-sharpening” break every hour. The “smoko” dispute spread briefly this morning to Westfield, where slaughtermen demanded four more breaks during the day.

The men at Westfield returned to work shortly before noon, and the Southdown dispute is expected to be settled after a meeting tomorrow morning. The new freezing workers’ award negotiated by the Auckland Freezing Workers’ Union provides for a 15-minutes’ break morning and afternoon as well as the lunch-hour which, in some cases, is reduced by agreement to 45 minutes, with a correspondingly early knocking-off time.
