CHARITABLE BEQUESTS

Nearly £4OOO Ohariteble bequests totalling nearly £4OOO are made in four Christchurch wills, probate of which was recently granted in the Supreme Court.

Edith Annie Stanhope, a widow, who died on October 8 leaving an estate valued at under £2OOO, left £2OO to the Social Service Council of the Diocese of Christchurch; £lOO to the Christchurch Aged People’s Welfare Council; £lOO to the Canterbury and West Coast centre of the St John Ambulance Association; £5O to the New Zealand Foundation for the Blind; and £5O to the Canterbury and West Coast branch of the New Zealand Crippled Children Society. The residue of her estate, after specific private bequests, is left to the Canterbury, Marlborough, and Westland division of the New Zealand branch of the British Empire Cancer Campaign Society. Charlotte Emily Young, a widow, who died on October 11 leaving an estate valued at under £3OOO, left £5O to the Lepers’ Trust Board. After a private bequest of £2OO, she left the residue of her estate in equal shares to the Sevemth-day Adventist Church and the British and Foreign Bible Society. Sarah Amelia McPherson, who died on October 4 leaving an estate valued at under £16,000, left £250 each to the British and Foreign Bible Society, the foreign mission fund of the Presbyterian Church, and the home mission fund of the Presbyterian Church. Valentine Burbridge, a retired steward who died on October 7 leaving an estate valued at under £l5OO, left £lOO each to the Leper Trust Board, missions conducted by the Church of Christ in Africa, and the Church of Christ at St. Albans. After a private bequest of £lOO, he left the residue to the Christchurch branch of the Institute for the Blind.
