Track Improvements
For many years it has been the policy of the North Canterbury Racing Club to make its meetings more attractive to owners and trainers and the general public. For this year’s meeting several improvements have been made to the course which is now one of the most attractive country courses in New Zealand. Since last Labour Weekend a new mile start has been constructed and this will be used for the first
time for the first race on Friday. In addition, as part of a plan to improve the entrance to the course new fences have been built along the drive from West Belt. The track is firm and in excellent order for a good weekend’s racing. Until the recent rain it had been watered regularly for about a month and has a good covering of grass which is not likely to cut up. Though the stakes are a little lower this year a full
field will race in all except the feature event, the North Canterbury Gold Cup, to be run on Friday. Even so this race has attracted a very even field of 12 and promises to be an exciting race. A special feature of Monday will be a fashion parade on the grounds, sponsored by the New Zealand Farmers Co-operative Association The best dressed woman on the ground will be picked out and awarded a £6O wardrobe as a prise.
