FIRST N.Z. GYMNASTS
Europeans Leading
"The Press" Special Service TOKYO, October 19. The 18-year-old Auckland bank clerk, Miss Theodora Hill, tonight became the first New Zealander to compete in Olympic Games gymnastics. She was the first of the three New Zealand girls to take the floor in the Olympic event They were among the last group to perform on the first day of the women's gymnastics section. It started with the rhythmic exercises on the floor and then moved in stages to the vaulting horse, the uneven parallel bars and the balance beau. At the end of the first section, Miss Hill was leading the other two girls, Miss Jean Spencer and Miss Pauline Gardiner, by a slight margin. The New Zealand girls’ points, while not as high as those scored by some of the European champions, were still ahead of many of the girls competing.
