Richetta Beats Her Fancied Stablemate
"The Press’’ Special Service
WELLINGTON Oct. 11. Richetta beat her stablemate, the fat favourite Gillen, convincingly in the Tui Gold Cup at Masterton on Saturday. It was Richetta’s first start beyond a sprint this season and her first win since the Miliar Handicap at Manawatu last April since when she had had only five races. Richetta has not been accepted for at Trentham next Saturday. but she will be in favour for the Watkins Handicap on the second day. With Gillin and Boundless dominating the betting. Richetta started 5/5 and paid £lO 18s 6d to win. All the honours were with her, and, she had Gillin covered when she drew up to him at the furlong, but there was an excuse for the favourite. He was going well on the turn but faltered and when he pulled up he had a cut fetlock. His jockey. A. T. Jones, told the judicial stewards he thought Gillin had been galloped on. Gay Minga, also in the fight at the furlong, weakened to third just ahead of Boundless which had been taken on in front by Voltaire from the start. Though he finished more than five lengths from the winner, Boundless - did not run a bad race. He fought back better than usual when tackled and blew hard on pulling up, indicating that he would improve. First Winner The three-year-old Baraboo gave the Ropiha stable apprentice C. G. Pocock, his first winning ride In the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Solway Handicap. Pocock kept Baraboo third in a gap behind the throatcutting pacemakers, Dunmure and Carester, till inside the last furlong, then passed them and held off late challenges from Plush and Jen Hai. Baraboo's win brings him Into favour for the Shorts Handicap next week, but just as attractive were the Wainui candidates, Plush and Jen Hal. Boundless and Voltaire were the leaders when they had covered a furlong in the Tui
Gold Cup. Gillin (Inner), Gay Minga, Clayton King and Tax Evader were in line next, then Howe Good, Pinocchio, Top Lad and African. Down the back Boundless and Voltaire were a length ahead of Tax Evader, Clayton King and Gillin with two lengths to Gay Minga, Howe Good, Richetta, going well on the inner. Top Lad. and African. At the five furlongs Boundless had a neck on Voltaire. There were two lengths to Gillin, then Clayton King, Tax Evader. Pinocchio, Gillin, Richetta, and Gay Minga. Gay Minga and Gillin had displaced Boundless at the furlong, but Richetta came on the inner and beat Gillin by threequarters of a length. There were three lengths and a half to Gay Minga, a length to Boundless, three lengths to African and Clayton King; then Tax Evader. Howe Good, Pinocchio. Top Lad and Voltaire. The weather was fine and cool and the track in good order. There was a large attendance, but hot favourites inhibited the betting. Only one of these, however, was successful, Royal Chase in the last race. Golden Prince was another winning favourite, but he was at good odds.
