TROTTING Surprise Win By Garry Logan At Forbury
Garry Logan caused a major upset when he led from end to end in the G. J. Barton Memorial Handicap at Forbury Park on Saturday night. He fought on in grand style in the straight and won by a short length from a strong finisher in the Wyndham mare, Deft, which had every chance. Vanderford, after being checked early, came home well for third.
Garry Logan, which is raced by Messrs L. and R. McNeill, of Invercargill, is trained at Templeton by F. E. Newfield. His win was his first since the 1963 New Brighton Cup. He went amiss shortly after that race and did not start at all last season because of unsoundness. Saturday’s race was his fourth start in a fresh campaign and it followed on the Ashburton Flying Stakes, a race in which he forced a hot pace until the three furlongs.
Garry Logan set a fairly easy pace throughout the race and he fought on boldly unde? pressure in the straight. Garry Logan is an aged gelding by Garrison Hanover from Margaret Logan. He is now on a 2nrin llsec mark and still requires one distance win to qualify for the New Zealand Cup next month. Garry Logan was the 11, 11 favourite of 12, and he paid £55 7s 6d for a win and £lO 14s 6d for a place. Van Rush and Junior Royal Jost ground at the start, while Oreti was checked. Garcon d’Or stumbled and broke after a furlong and a half. He checked Cairnbrae, Vanderford and Junior Royal as he dropped back through the field. Garry Logan set the pace from Peel, Flying Blue, Rustic Lad, Urrall, Deft, Massacre (three wide). Orbiter, Van Rush, Vanderford, and Junior Royal.. There was very little change in this order until the last half-mile. Garry Logan
raced to the straight ahead of Peel, Flying Blue, Massacre, Urrall, Rustic Lad and Deft, with Orbiter, Vanderford, Van Rush and Junior Royal showing up. Deft made a game but vain effort to overhaul Garry Logan, which lasted to win by a short length. Vanderford came home strongly for third a length back, with the same distance to Orbiter, which just beat Urrall, Rustic Lad, Massacre and Junior Royal. Then came Garcon d’Or and Peel, with Oreti last.
Second Leg Stormont, the outsider of the field, caused another major surprise when he led from end to end in the second leg, the Telegraph Handicap. It was Stormont’s first win since being purchased last July by Mr E. Lloyd, a Christchurch fruiterer, for whom he is trained by C. C. Devine. He is the first horse raced by Mr Lloyd. Stormont paid £2l 15s 6d for a win and completed a double worth £866 10s 6d for £l. Lakeda, Bonnieburn and Highland Step lost ground at the start, while Massacre
broke badly and dropped right away. Stormont Jed out, with Avante moving up on the outside of Cheta at the five furlongs. Stormont led for home ahead of this pair, with Adios Heather, Ahumai, Highland Step, Flying Note and Bonniebum handy. Stormont ran on gamely and won by a short length from Avante. Adios Heather came home well for third a length back, half a head in front of Flying Note, with Bonnieburn, Ahumai, Cheta and Highland Step next.
