OFF-SEASON TRAINING
Rugby, League Take Part
A number of winter iportimen showed enthusiasm for summer training when four groups of runners covered prying distances during the St. Martins Athletic Club'e second off season training run on Saturday. The object of the runs la to build stamina as a basis of increased speed during sharp-entng-up training later tn the summer in preparation for the next winter season when additional fitness will be needed both for the Springbok tour and the World Cup League series The runs are now being held reguiarly from the St. Anne's Hall in Centaurus road on Saturdays. Last Saturday most of the runners did a four-mtle training run al a moderate pace on the flat in the St. MartlnsOpawa area. Another group, including the Christchurch Rugby forward and former Auckland athletics representative, S. Caughey. completed a 10-mlle run on the Summit road. A Christchurch Rugby League player, J. Hawthorne, formerly of Whakalane, ran creditably to cover 15 miles on the Cashmere hills in a group which included some of the St. Martine Club's leading distance runners.
