COLLEGIANS START WELL
Weak Attack By St Albans The fine start given them by J. H. M, Dawson and R. C. Bromley was turned to good account by the later Old Collegians batsmen on an easy-paced wicket at Elmwood park. Bromley, playing in his first senior match, was both determined and-patient, while Dawson, in aggressive mood, played some fine forcy shots and contributed all but 12 to the opening partnership of 60. A. R. Mac Gibbon also batted well; he was particularly severe on the leg side and hit nine fours. The St. Albans attack was mediocre, and although the batsmen never got on top they were seldom troubled. T. L. Jones was persistent and J. W. Burtt was a mixture of good and bad. His bowling suffered at the hands of N. F. Curtis and he was unfortunate to have four chances missed. St. Albans had cause to regret putting Collegians into bat for the pitch became faster later in the day, giving a sharpness to the Old Collegians' bowling. Dawson bowled very well, varying his pace and tempting the batsmen outside the off stump. He put his side in a strong position by bowling Burtt in the last over. The first four St. Albans wickets fell for 35 runs, then a partnership of 62 between Burtt and M. B. Poore produced the best batting of the match. Poore was content to play quietly but Burtt hit the ball cleanly to play some beautiful cover and off drives made with power and perfect timing. The fielding of both sides was adequate but both wicket-keep-ers, S. C. Guillen and J. E. England, gave good displays. Umpires: Messrs L. C. Moore and L. C. Johnson.
