In “Civilised” Fashion
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Oct 11. Are teen-age New Zealanders’ fashions “civilised”? Some persons questioned this, the Minister of Customs (Mr Shelton) said this evening. Opening the annual conference of the Textile and Garment Manufacturers’ Federation at the Chateau Tongariro, he said. “Some pundit once suggested that the more the inhabitants of a country
spent on clothes, the more civilised the nation would be. “Some members of the public may have cause to question whether some of the fashions for our teenagers are in fact civilised,” said the Minister. But he added. New Zealand was a very civilised nation for its size. Sales of clothing material between April 1, 1963, and March 31, 1964, topped £lO2 million, according to the Department of Statistics, said Mr Shelton.
