Confrontation To Extend To Sport
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) DJAKARTA, October 11. Indonesia’s withdrawal from the Olympic Games was today discussed by the Supreme Operational Command in a meeting at the palace chaired by the Acting President (Dr. J. Leimena).
The Minister for Public Relations, Dr. Ruslan Abdulgani, said after the meeting that Indonesia should intensify her confrontation in all fields, including sports. Lieutenant-General Ahmad Yani, the Army Commander, said the meeting had also discussed the new arms agreement with the Soviet Union which was signed early this week.
He said a new defence system had been drafted in which all waterways and straits in the country could be sealed at any time. Most of the Indonesian Olympic team returned to Djakarta last night after Indonesia withdrew from the Olympic Games because her swimmers and athletes were not allowed to participate. Colonel Gatot Suwagijo, leader of the team, said that Indonesia would consider her par’i ipation in the next Olympic Games if the swimming and athletics federations could give directives that would be acceptable to her. Dr. Prijono, Minister Coordinator of Education and Culture, welcoming the team, said it was better to go home than “to kneel under the Colonialists and Imperialists in sports?’ Ninety members returned. The other 30 will arrive soon.
