FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—An anti-cyclone centred near the Chatham Islands is moving away to the east and a deep depression over the western Tasman Sea is moving south-eastwards towards the south of the South Island. Forecast: Canterbury.—Moderate to fresh winds, northwesterlies inland, but north-easterlies on the coast; partly cloudy, with mild afternoon temperatures. Outlook: rain in the alps and scattered showers elsewhere. Buller and Westland.—Moderate to fresh north-east winds; cloud increasing and occasional light rain developing in the morning and becoming more persistent; mild temperatures. Outlook: rain persisting. Marlborough and Nelson.—Light to moderate north to north-east winds; partly cloudy, apart from some scattered light showers likely in Nelson; mild day temperatures. Outlook: unsettled, with rain mainly light and scattered on Kaikoura coast.
