ON BIG LAMBS

A 161 b lamb born to a five-year-old Romney ewe on the Onuku property of Mr H. P. Hamilton about four miles out of Akaroa was the biggest seen by the farm manager, Mr L. T. Fechney, in more than 30 years work with sheep, but it is not near the record for size. Professor I. E. Coop, professor of animal science at Lincoln College, said this week that anything over 141 b was fairly big, but they were really getting into the big size when they approached the 201 b mark. The size of the ewe was, however, a matter of some importance when considering the relative size of the lamb, he said. This season at the college Professor Coop said that several lambs of 161 b weight had been born. This was possibly, a year when ewes had given birth to big single lambs, he added.
